The Short 3D Movie Competition for Students is Officially Launched in Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur, 31 July 2006 – Click Grafix Sdn Bhd launched CompCG 2006, a short 3D animation movie competition for students, at the MSC Innovation Centre in the heart of ’s Multimedia Super Corridor in Cyberjaya. A sequel to CompCG 2004, this competition continues in its mission to unearth fresh new talents in the art of 3D animation among students in this region with a call for students to create a short 3D movie not exceeding five minutes, based on an open theme using any 3D applications.

The competition was officiated by En. Kamil Othman, Vice President of the Creative Multimedia Department - Industry Development Division of the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC). The competition was officially launched with En. Kamil clicking a mouse to present a short 3D animation created by a 3D animator from Click Grafix.

In his officiating speech, Mr. Kamil addressed the challenge for the local industry to create more world class digital content with significant reflections of our rich cultural and national heritage. He expressed hope to see the current generation of students succeed in achieving the feat of bringing our local content to further standards. Mr. Kamil’s parting words to the students accentuated the need for the initiative to go one step beyond just winning the competition, and to expand their 3D works further. Said Mr. Kamil, “If there’s a proposal to extend the work further, MDeC will certainly look into it”.

Mr. Kamil’s speech was followed by a short introduction to the competition by Mr. Ahmed Balfaqih - Managing Director of Click Grafix. In his address to those present Mr. Ahmed reiterated the objectives of CompCG 2006 which serves as a non-commercial oriented community service to the local computer graphics community and educational sector. In addition to its cause to seek and raise more outstanding talents in 3D animation, the competition is also a platform providing qualified students with an opportunity to gain entry to relevant employment and job offers within the industry. Mr. Ahmed said, “The competition is stretched over a period of eleven months to encourage educational institutions to integrate it as a semester or final year project into the respective academic programmes”. Competition contestants are required to submit their entries by 30 June 2007.

In the midst of his oration, Mr. Ahmed also elaborated on the criteria for judging the entries, emphasizing that priority and focus would be given to technical excellence and reminding students not to concentrate on story telling alone. This was further illustrated by highlighting several technical points from the presentation of a short 3D movie titled, The Frog, which was created by Mr. Lim Kin Kwan who won the competition in 2004.

The launch of CompCG 2006 was attended by about sixty invited guests consisting Head of Departments, 3D lecturers and students from various educational institutions apart from several industry professionals and representatives from MDeC. The launch ended with the presentation of a token of appreciation to Mr. Kamil Othman as the guest of honour. A short moment was extended for a brief Q&A session with various questions posed by several attendees. Guests were thereafter treated to a lunch buffet.
