4 May 2002

It was another packed room for our fourth meeting that was attended by more than 20 members, with many regulars present. Mr Ahmed Balfaqih resumed the role as chairman and Jin Ho started the ball rolling with a preview of the recently released LightWave 7.5.

MYWAVE members were given a brief introduction of the slightly different interface as well as a glimpse of several new features, which included FX Monkey, Sliders and MotionMixer 2. The 3D artist also highlighted new elements in Layout Utilities and Modeling.

The crowd perked up further when Stan Lee’s 3D fat lady sexily sashayed and bounced on screen at the 2nd session. The professional illustrator explained how his model was created using the morphing technique and later shared tips and tricks (for the not-so-savvy) discovered in the course of accidents and mistakes made.

That was followed by a sneak preview of his humorous short 3D animation aptly titled “Are You Chicken?” featuring two fowls fighting over grains. Several problems were noted in the partially completed animation but 3D wizard Jin Ho helped shed some light on the puzzle.

As the meeting drew to a close, Mr. Teng C. Wei, the Managing Director of Cut & Paste Productions Sdn Bhd presented a request for interested volunteers to assist with the development of a 3D MTV music video for a local artist. His enquiry attracted several interested members, whom we hope would get the opportunity to work on this project and return to share the experience with us in future meetings.

The Topics covered:

  • LightWave 7.5 -- What’s new
    - Sliders
    - MotionMixer2
    - Layout Utilities -- path tool, xray bones, expression builder, keyframer, radiosity up to 8 indirect bounces
    - Modeling -- interactive bandsaw, UV spider, band glue
  • An hour with Stan

Lastly, as usual, we look forward to the next meeting where more interesting bits and bytes, or groans and sighs are going to be shared with all. So glue your eyeballs to our website for news on what’s coming in the next meeting.

And once again, for those curious creatures who wish to know what goes on at our meetings or what it’s all about … but, have not registered for membership, SIGN UP now! Hmph …
